How Big Is an NBA Basketball Court?

An NBA basketball court is 94 feet long and 50 feet wide.

That’s 4,700 square feet of playing surface.

If you’ve ever watched an NBA game and thought the players make the court look small, that’s mostly because they’re really, really good at what they do. Put yourself at one baseline and look all the way to the other end and 94 feet feels a lot different.

NBA courts also have specific requirements for things like the three-point line, free-throw line, center circle, and other markings.

Those details aren’t there just to make the court look good. They’re part of what makes the playing surface a regulation basketball court.

What About a College Basketball Court?

Here’s where things get interesting.

A college basketball court is also 94 feet long and 50 feet wide for NCAA play.

So, if you put an NBA court and a college court next to each other, the overall playing area can be the same size.

But that doesn’t mean the two courts are identical.

There are differences in some of the markings and dimensions used on the floor.

That’s something that matters when you’re building or finishing a court. You can’t just paint the lines wherever they look right and call it good.

The measurements have to be right for the level of basketball being played.

How Big Is a High School Basketball Court?

A typical high school basketball court is 84 feet long and 50 feet wide.

That means it’s shorter than an NBA or college court.

If you’ve spent much time around school gyms, you’ve probably noticed that courts can look a little different from one building to another. That’s because there can be differences in the rules and specifications being followed.

And when you’re working on a basketball floor, knowing those specifications before the work begins is important.

So, Are All Basketball Courts the Same?

Nope.

That’s one of those things that seems obvious once you think about it, but it’s easy to assume that a basketball court is a basketball court.

The size, markings, logos, and layout can all depend on what the court is being used for.

A professional arena has different requirements than a high school gym.

A tournament facility may have different needs than a school that uses its gym for basketball, volleyball, assemblies, and everything else a school gym gets asked to do.

That’s why the first question isn’t always, “What does the court look like?”

Sometimes it’s:

“What is this court going to be used for?”

Why Does Court Size Matter?

• Other markings

And then there’s the flooring itself.

The wood, finish, installation, and maintenance all play a part in how the finished court looks and performs.

What About Portable Basketball Courts?

A portable floor has to be designed so it can be assembled, disassembled, transported, and put back together while still creating a consistent playing surface.

That’s a pretty impressive job when you stop and think about it.
